IMIST
Moroccan Institute for Scientific and Technical Information
INIST is one of three French institutions that support the development of the new Moroccan institute as part of a cooperation program between France and Morocco.
The Moroccan government 2000-2004 five-year development program included a project for the creation of an institute for scientific and technical information (IMIST - Institut Marocain de l’Information Scientifique et Technique). The project is managed by the Moroccan national center for scientific and technical research (CNRST - Centre National pour la Recherche Scientifique et Technique) with a capital budget of 150 million dirhams and additional support from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs under its Priority Solidarity Fund program.
Within the framework of this program, INIST along with two French organizations, CIRAD, the center for agricultural research for developing countries, and ADIT, the agency for the dissemination of technical information, formed a consortium to support the setting up of IMIST. Under the leadership of INIST, the consortium provides expertise, assistance and training especially concerning the: - Legal aspects of the project,
- Agreements with IMIST’s partners,
- Creation of a range of products and services,
- Implementation of an information system.
IMIST’s missions
IMIST’s purpose is to provide a highly effective system for the Moroccan scientific and industrial communities to access information and thus contribute to the enhancement of the country’s economic fabric. It will offer services such as:
Online databases and services (portals) development,
Remote document supply,
Monitoring and business intelligence,
Access to electronic resources,
Access to a unique library of around 100,000 books and 3,500 journals.
IMIST’s offices and library will be located in the capital city of Rabat in a prestigious building that will also house the headquarters of the Moroccan center for scientific and technical research.
On the INIST side, about 30 people are actively involved in the project. INIST and IMIST personnel often travel back and forth between France and Morocco.
Once the first phase of the project ends with IMIST officialy opening in 2007, both institutes will continue to work together on a variety of projects under discussion or pending financing.
With IMIST, Morocco has joined in 2006 the countries covered by the SIST (Scientific and Technical Information System) project another Priority Solidarity Fund program of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs designed to equip some African Countries with an infrastructure enabling them to access international scientific and technical information and to disseminate the production of local research. INIST through CNRS is also involved in this project.
